Durham: Leadgate
We offer fully funded forest school sessions here for children aged 5 to 12 years during selected school holidays.
About this Location
We meet at the Watling Stone and walk together down a winding, well-trodden path into the woods. As the path opens up into a meadow and a gentle stream trickles along to our left, we duck right into the shelter of the trees, dodging mole hills and tree roots.
We walk deep into the woods and there in the centre is our space, a fire circle with log seating in a large circle, enough to accommodate us all. Here we start and end our day.
Some of the days will be spent exploring our surroundings, fishing in the river and climbing fallen trees at wood IO.
This site is open to the public and used daily by local residents.

Watling Woods

Watling Woods is a small forest located inside an open expansive green space with a river running through the centre, owned by Durham County Council, situated in Leadgate, County Durham.
To gain access, please wait to meet the lead practitioner at the entrance into the woodland by the Watling Stone, about 40 metres up from Watling Street on the right-hand side. From there we take the right-hand path for about 20 metres before turning left on a small path into the woods.
Most of this route to our site is accessible by pushchair but there is some rough, uneven terrain.
Parking:
On-street parking is an option off Watling Street.
Travel by train:
The closest station would be Chester-lee-street or Dunston, from there you would have to get a bus.
Travel by bus:
The closest bus stop would be: Watling Wood bus stop.
