Gateshead: Chopwell Community Woodland

Planted in 1968 on old coal mining land, Chopwell Community woodland is accessible by foot to the residents of Chopwell. North of the field opposite Chopwell Community centre.

About this Location

Chopwell mine closed in 1966, and shortly after this piece of woodland was planted to help the land regenerate.

It is now a popular destination for the Chopwell community who walk their dogs and play here.

Whilst Chopwell may be famous for ‘Chopwell Woods’, this small woodland sits in the heart of the community, bridging Milkwellburn Woods with Chopwell Woods.

It doesn’t have an official name, so we’re calling it “Chopwell Community Woodland”.
